Corporators Rupali Dhadwe and Dr Dada Kodre submitted a proposal on 4 June 2026 for solar-powered LED streetlights across Pune's 32 newly merged villages, Punekar News reported on 9 June. The proposal was placed before the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Standing Committee for consideration. It is about four months old, and we could not find a report on whether the committee approved it, so treat it as a proposal.
What is proposed
The proposal seeks solar LED streetlights on key roads, internal lanes, public spaces, parks and bus stops in the merged villages. The streetlights would have battery backup so that illumination continues during power failures.
The case officials make
Civic officials told the paper that solar lighting can significantly reduce the corporation's electricity spending and lower carbon emissions, and that the longer life of LEDs should cut maintenance and replacement costs. The report says that once sanctioned, PMC is expected to make budget provisions and implement the work in phases.
Why it is worth following
Newly merged villages often have uneven lighting coverage compared with the older city. If the proposal is approved, it could lead to tenders for solar LED street lights, which we will report when they are published.
