These factors make well-specified solar street lights (LiFePO4 battery, MPPT, 5-day autonomy) the only reliable all-year solution for UP villages.
UPNEDA and State Schemes
UPNEDA (Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency) is the state nodal agency for solar energy. Key programmes: Mukhyamantri Saur Swarozgar Yojana - includes solar infrastructure for rural areas. DDUGJY and PM-KUSUM components for rural electrification and solar. Uttar Pradesh Smart City projects (Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Kanpur) - LED street lights with SCADA control. Jal Jeevan Mission infrastructure - solar lights at water supply points in villages. Fog Season - The Critical Design Challenge
UP's winter fog (December–February) is severe in the Terai belt and Indo-Gangetic Plain. Solar irradiance on a foggy day: 50–150 W/m² versus clear-day 700–900 W/m². A standard 3-day autonomy system will fail after 3 foggy days - common in UP January. Correct specification for UP: 5-day autonomy battery, 2× panel-to-LED ratio (oversized panel to harvest maximum on partial irradiance days), MPPT controller (harvests 30–40% more on partial irradiance than PWM), and smart dimming to 30% after midnight (extends battery from 5 to 8 days during prolonged fog). A properly designed UP system runs through the worst fog weeks without failure.
Urban UP - Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra Smart City Projects
Lucknow Smart City Development Limited, Varanasi Smart City, and Agra Smart City are implementing LED street light upgrades with SCADA control across their jurisdictions. These projects use government GeM tenders with strict technical specifications including ERDA test reports and 5-year warranties. Kanpur, Prayagraj, Meerut, and Ghaziabad municipalities are implementing LED upgrades under AMRUT 2.0. Private sector: UP's booming real estate in Noida, Greater Noida, and Lucknow creates large demand for LED street lights, decorative poles, and campus lighting from housing developers and industrial parks.
