Central Government Schemes (MNRE)
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) runs the National Solar Mission which includes provisions for solar street lighting. The RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) model allows installation with zero upfront cost for gram panchayats. The PM-KUSUM scheme covers rural solar lighting for agricultural areas. The Solar Cities Programme funds urban solar installations including street lights. All central schemes require products to be BIS-certified and purchased through empanelled manufacturers.
Maharashtra State Schemes
MEDA (Maharashtra Energy Development Agency) provides subsidies for solar projects including street lights. MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company) has schemes for solar-powered village roads. NMC (Nashik Municipal Corporation) has deployed Xera Tech lights under smart city projects. Under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), villages can apply for solar street lights free of cost. District Planning Committees allocate funds for solar lighting in scheduled areas and tribal talukas.
How to Apply - Step by Step
Step 1: Contact your Gram Panchayat or Municipal Council. Step 2: Request a 'Solar Street Light Proposal' under the district's annual action plan. Step 3: Submit a site plan showing road length, number of poles, and spacing. Step 4: The proposal goes to the District Planning Committee or Zilla Parishad. Step 5: Approved projects are tendered - BIS-certified manufacturers like Xera Tech participate. Step 6: Installation is done by the manufacturer or approved contractor. Step 7: The gram panchayat pays only the local contribution (typically 10–20%, sometimes zero for BPL villages).
CSR Funding for Solar Street Lights
Under Companies Act 2013, companies with turnover above ₹1,000 crore or profit above ₹5 crore must spend 2% of net profit on CSR activities. Solar street lighting in nearby villages qualifies as CSR under rural development and environmental sustainability. Many corporates - including automotive, pharma, and FMCG companies around Nashik's MIDC - fund solar street lights in surrounding villages. Contact your local company's CSR committee or submit a proposal through your gram panchayat.
