Monthly Visual Inspection
Walk or drive the road after dark (or use a maintenance complaint register). Note: poles that are not illuminated. Lights that are significantly dimmer than adjacent ones. Visible physical damage (broken cover, leaning pole, graffiti, bird nests on luminaire arm). Poles where the light stays on during the day (sensor failure). After rain: poles with visible water pooling at base (drainage concern, risk to foundation). Log findings with GPS or pole number. Assign priority: safety-critical dark lights (near school, junction) = Priority 1, respond within 48 hours. Others = Priority 2, address within 2 weeks.
Quarterly Maintenance Tasks
Clean luminaire cover glass: remove accumulated dust with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive materials. A clean cover glass restores 5–15% lux output in dusty areas. Clean solar panel (for solar street lights): same cleaning procedure. Even critical for performance. Check and tighten all external fasteners: arm bolts, luminaire attachment bolts, pole base nuts. Check cable entry glands: look for cracking or loosening - reseal with silicone if needed. Replace failed lamps (for systems with replaceable LED modules): match replacement to original wattage and colour temperature. Visual check of pole paint: mark and schedule repainting of any rust spots found.
Annual Professional Maintenance
Engage a qualified electrical contractor or the manufacturer's service team. Tasks: insulation resistance (IR) test of complete circuit - minimum 1 MΩ at 500V Megger. Earth resistance measurement at each pole - maximum 5 ohms. Check torque on all anchor bolt nuts. Measure lux at standard reference points and compare to commissioning record - document decline rate. Inspect interior of each junction box for moisture, corrosion, and rodent damage. For solar systems: measure battery voltage and State of Health (SoH) - below 70% SoH = replacement due within 12 months. Check controller DIP switch settings have not been tampered with. Pole condition inspection: probe any rust spots to check for section thinning.
Monsoon Preparation (Pre-June)
Before June 1st each year: reseal all cable entry glands with fresh silicone - old silicone hardens and cracks after one year of Indian summer. Check underground cable marker posts are in place (prevents inadvertent excavation damage). Verify drainage channels clear around all pole bases - waterlogging accelerates foundation corrosion. For solar systems: check that panel frame drainage holes are clear. Cut back any tree branches that have grown within 1m of solar panels during the dry season. Earth electrode: check for rodent or termite damage to earth wire - replace if chewed.
