How Often to Clean

In clean rural areas with normal rainfall: clean at least once before the dry season (March–April) and once after the monsoon (October). In dusty areas near roads, construction sites, or agricultural fields: clean every 2 months during the dry season. In industrial areas near chimneys or near grain processing: monthly cleaning. In coastal Maharashtra: rinse panels monthly to remove salt deposit (salt reduces panel output and corrodes the frame over time). Simple test: if you run your finger across the panel surface and find a layer of grey dust, it needs cleaning.

What You Need

For poles up to 5m with panels within reach from a ladder: soft microfibre cloth or soft sponge, a bucket of clean water (room temperature - never use cold water on a hot panel as thermal shock can crack the glass), and optionally a very small amount of mild liquid soap (not detergent - it leaves residue). For panels above 5m height: use a water-fed pole brush (a long-handled soft brush with a water pipe - same tools window cleaners use) from the ground. Never use abrasive materials (wire brushes, scouring pads, rough cloth), never use chemical solvents, and never use high-pressure water jets (they can force water under panel seals).

Step-by-Step Cleaning Procedure

Step 1: Do this in the early morning or evening when the panel is cool and not in direct sunlight - cleaning a hot panel with cold water can cause micro-cracks in the glass. Step 2: Gently rinse the panel surface with clean water to loosen loose dust. Step 3: Wipe with a damp soft cloth in straight strokes from top to bottom - do not use circular scrubbing motions on the glass surface. Step 4: If bird droppings are present, soak them for 2–3 minutes with a wet cloth first, then wipe gently - do not scrape. Step 5: Rinse with clean water. Step 6: Wipe dry with a clean dry microfibre cloth to prevent water spotting in hard water areas. Step 7: From the ground, visually verify the panel surface looks clean and uniform.

Safety During Panel Cleaning

Never climb a solar street light pole - the poles are not designed for climbing and can bend or collapse. Use a ladder placed against the wall or a separate structure - never lean a ladder against the pole. Keep one hand on the ladder at all times and never overreach. If the panel is on a high pole (above 5m) that cannot be safely reached from a stable ladder, use a long-handled brush from the ground. For gram panchayat maintenance programmes: train 2 volunteers per village on safe panel cleaning - it takes 5 minutes per pole from a stable ladder position.
