Use stainless steel 316 or FRP-housed luminaires. Sludge handling areas: methane and hydrogen sulphide from anaerobic sludge digestion create a potentially explosive atmosphere (ATEX Zone 2). Use Ex-e (increased safety) or Ex-d (flame-proof) classified luminaires. Pump room: high humidity from water spray and constant condensation - IP66 minimum. Screening and primary treatment outdoor areas: IP65 minimum. Administrative and control buildings: standard commercial LED panels.

CPHEEO (Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation) guidelines for water supply and sanitation infrastructure specify: pump room and machinery area: 200–300 lux. Chemical storage: 150–200 lux. Sedimentation and filtration tank areas (outdoor): 50–100 lux for safe navigation. Sampling laboratory: 500 lux. Control room: 500 lux. Emergency access routes: 10 lux minimum (emergency lighting required per IS 2189). Most STPs and WTPs in India operate 24/7 - lighting must be reliable continuously. Emergency lighting backup (minimum 2-hour battery-backed LED) is mandatory for all occupied areas.

Corrosion and Chemical Resistance

Standard powder-coated aluminium corrodes rapidly in chlorine environments. Specifications for chemical zones: fixture housing: FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) or 316 stainless steel. Mounting hardware: 316 stainless steel exclusively. Gaskets: chlorine-resistant silicone (EPDM degrades in chlorine exposure). Cable: FRLS (Fire Retardant Low Smoke) or FRLS-LSZH for chemical areas. Cable glands: nylon or 316 stainless. IP rating: IP66 minimum for all areas within 5m of water or chemical handling. IK08 for areas accessible to maintenance equipment.

Energy Savings in Municipal Water Infrastructure

Water treatment plants are significant electricity consumers - pumping is the dominant cost, but lighting is a notable secondary consumer. A medium WTP (50 MLD capacity) with 200 x 250W MH outdoor flood lights: current annual lighting consumption = 200 × 250W × 10h × 365 = 182,500 kWh/year = ₹12.8 lakh/year at ₹7/unit.
