Temperature Challenges in Cold Storage
Indian cold storage facilities operate at: ambient (loading area): +30 to +45°C. Cool room (fruits and vegetables): +2 to +8°C. Cold room (dairy, pharmaceuticals): -2 to +4°C. Deep freeze (ice cream, frozen food, meat): -18 to -25°C. Standard LED drivers are rated down to -20°C — adequate for most Indian cold storage. For deep freeze below -25°C (rare in India): specify drivers rated to -40°C. The bigger challenge is not cold — it is the thermal cycling and condensation when workers enter cold rooms with warm humid air from outside, causing moisture to condense on light surfaces.
IP Rating Requirements by Zone
Loading dock and dispatch area (+10 to +30°C, outdoor weather exposure): IP65 minimum, IK08 for forklift areas. Cool room (+2 to +8°C, hose-down weekly): IP66 minimum — high-pressure hosing. Cold room (0 to +4°C, daily condensation): IP66, sealed driver compartment, stainless steel hardware — standard zinc hardware corrodes rapidly in high-humidity cold air. Deep freeze (-18°C, defrost cycles create steam): IP67 minimum — temporary submersion equivalent is needed for severe defrost cycle steam. For ammonia refrigeration plants: check if ATEX-rated fixtures are needed (ammonia is explosive above its lower flammability limit).
Lux Requirements in Cold Storage
IS 3646 Part 2 specifies: general storage area: 150–200 lux. Loading and dispatch: 200–300 lux. Order picking and packing: 300–500 lux. Quality inspection: 500–750 lux (use task lighting in addition to ambient). Safety markings and exit paths: minimum 10 lux (emergency lighting covers this). Cold storage workers wear thick gloves and multiple layers — they need higher contrast and better colour rendering (CRI 80+) to read labels and distinguish product types accurately. Specify CRI 80 minimum for cold storage luminaires.
Recommended Fixture Types for Cold Storage
LED batten (linear): 600mm or 1200mm weatherproof LED batten with IP66, most common for cool rooms and cold rooms. Compact with minimal crevices where moisture can collect. LED lowbay with vapour-tight housing: for ceiling heights 3–5m in loading areas. IP66, die-cast aluminium with silicone gasket — silicone maintains flexibility at -25°C (EPDM gaskets harden and crack at cold temperatures). Avoid: plastic housings (embrittlement at -18°C), standard powder-coated steel fittings (condensation causes rapid rust in cold rooms).
