Illuminance Requirements for Fuel Stations

PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation) and OISD (Oil Industry Safety Directorate) guidelines recommend: Forecourt canopy (dispensing area): 300–500 lux minimum. Driveway approach: 50–100 lux. Cashier/payment booth: 500 lux. Service bay: 300 lux. Outdoor parking: 50 lux. Signage illumination: as per brand guidelines. BPCL, IOCL, HPCL, and other OMCs have specific lighting standards that their dealer outlets must meet - verify with your area manager.

Canopy Light Wattage and Placement

For a standard 4-nozzle forecourt with a 10m × 8m canopy: Use 6–8 units of 150W LED canopy/flood lights. Mount flush under the canopy, spaced evenly. Target: 400+ lux at 1m height above the dispensing surface. For a larger 8-nozzle forecourt (15m × 12m): 10–12 units of 150–200W lights. The LED canopy light (also called LED canopy fixture) is specifically designed for flush or semi-recessed installation under petrol pump canopies - not a standard flood light which would create glare on the dispensers.

ATEX Zone Safety for Fuel Station Lighting

Under the Petroleum Act and PESO regulations, fuel station forecourts are classified as hazardous zones: Zone 1 (directly above dispensers within 0.5m radius): requires ATEX or PESO-approved explosion-proof fixtures. Zone 2 (0.5m–1m from dispensers): requires intrinsically safe or Ex-d rated fixtures. Outside Zone 2 (beyond 1m, under canopy): standard IP65 LED fixtures are acceptable. Verify zone classification with your PESO-certified electrical contractor. Using standard flood lights in Zone 1 or Zone 2 is a serious safety violation.

Energy Savings for Petrol Pump Operators

A typical 4-nozzle forecourt running 12 hours/night with 8 × 250W sodium canopy lights consumes: 8 × 250W × 12h = 24,000 Wh = 24 units/night = 8,760 units/year. At commercial rate ₹8/unit: ₹70,080/year. After switching to 8 × 100W LED canopy lights (same brightness, better distribution): 9.6 units/night = 3,504 units/year = ₹28,032/year.
