The IK Scale
IK rating is defined by IEC 62262. The scale runs from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (highest protection). Practical values for street lights: IK06 = protected against 1 joule impact (35g dropped from 285mm - equivalent to a light accidental touch). IK07 = 2 joule (500g from 400mm - moderate impact). IK08 = 5 joule (1.7kg from 300mm - firm punch equivalent). This is the minimum for public road street lights. IK09 = 10 joule (5kg from 200mm - heavy tool impact). IK10 = 20 joule (5kg from 400mm - severe blow). Used in high-vandalism areas and sports facilities.
Why IK Rating Matters in India
Street lights in Indian public spaces face regular impacts: stones thrown by children (IK08 resists stones up to the 5-joule threshold), construction vehicles brushing against roadside poles, accidental contact by tractors, trucks, and heavy machinery on rural roads, and deliberate vandalism in some urban areas. A cover glass rated only IK06 shatters from a stone impact that an IK08 cover would survive. Broken cover glass exposes the internal driver and LEDs to rain, insects, and dust - accelerating total failure. For gram panchayat road lights: IK08 minimum. For bus stops, urban footpaths, school areas: IK09. For high-vandalism zones: IK10.
IK Rating and Cover Material
The IK rating is achieved through the material of the outer cover/lens: Standard borosilicate glass (untreated): achieves IK06–IK07 at best. Tempered safety glass (used in Xera Tech products): achieves IK08–IK09. Polycarbonate (PC) lens: achieves IK10 but yellows with UV exposure over time - not ideal for outdoor use without UV stabilisation. UV-stabilised polycarbonate: achieves IK10 + UV resistance - used in premium outdoor fixtures. For Indian conditions, tempered glass with IK08 is the standard specification that balances cost, durability, and optical clarity. All Xera Tech outdoor LED street lights use tempered glass covers rated minimum IK08.
