What Emergency Lighting Does

When mains power fails (power cut, circuit fault, fire), emergency lighting serves two purposes: Escape route lighting: illuminates corridors, stairwells, and exit routes to guide people safely out of a building. Minimum 1 lux at floor level on escape routes per IS 2189. Open area anti-panic lighting: prevents panic in large areas (halls, auditoriums) by maintaining enough light for people to see each other and exits. Minimum 0.5 lux average in the open area. Standby lighting: maintains lighting at full or near-full levels for critical operations (hospital operating theatres, control rooms, data centres). Emergency lights must activate within 5 seconds of mains failure and must sustain operation for at least 1 hour (IS 2189 Category 1) or 3 hours (Category 3 for complex buildings and hospitals).

IS 2189 Requirements

IS 2189 (Code of Practice for Fire Safety of Buildings - Electrical Installations, Escape Lighting) mandates emergency lighting in: All multi-storey buildings above 15m height. Hospitals and healthcare facilities (all floors). Hotels and lodges (10 rooms or more). Educational institutions. Industrial establishments with more than 50 workers. Underground areas and basements. Places of public assembly (cinema halls, auditoriums). Any area where a power failure would create a safety hazard. Compliance is verified by the local fire authority during the annual fire safety inspection (NOC renewal).

Types of Emergency LED Lights

Self-contained emergency light: individual fitting with its own battery - charges from mains, switches to battery on mains failure. Simplest installation, most common for small buildings. Central battery system: all emergency lights powered from a central battery room. Used in large hospitals and complex buildings - battery maintenance is centralised. Maintained emergency light: the LED is on continuously (as a normal light), powered from battery as well as mains. Useful in areas requiring continuous light. Non-maintained: LED is off during normal operation, switches on only during mains failure - most common type. Combination: can function as both maintained and non-maintained.

LED Emergency Lights vs Fluorescent

Old emergency lights used fluorescent tubes or incandescent lamps. LED emergency lights are now standard because: LED activates instantly (no warm-up). LED consumes 60–70% less battery power - same battery lasts 3× longer, or a smaller battery is needed. LED emergency lights last 50,000 hours of standby/charging versus 8,000 hours for fluorescent. LED performance is consistent throughout battery discharge - fluorescent dims significantly as battery depletes. LED emergency lights from BIS-certified manufacturers with IS 15885 certification are required for building compliance in India.
