Monocrystalline vs Polycrystalline
Monocrystalline panels: made from single-crystal silicon. Efficiency 19–23%. Better performance in high temperature and low light (diffuse irradiance). Higher cost. Smaller for the same wattage - important for all-in-one street lights where panel size is constrained. Polycrystalline panels: made from multi-crystal silicon. Efficiency 15–17%. Lower cost (15–20% cheaper per watt). Adequate for applications with ample space and good irradiance. Slightly worse in partial shade and high temperature. Recommendation: always specify monocrystalline for solar street lights. The compact size advantage (a 40W mono panel is 30% smaller than a 40W poly panel) directly improves wind loading and aesthetics on a pole-mounted installation.
Temperature Coefficient - India-Specific Issue
Solar panels lose efficiency as temperature rises. The temperature coefficient (Pmax) specifies the % power loss per degree Celsius above 25°C. Typical values: monocrystalline: -0.38 to -0.42%/°C. Polycrystalline: -0.40 to -0.45%/°C. In India, solar panels routinely reach 65–75°C surface temperature on summer afternoons (ambient 45°C + solar heating). At 70°C (45°C above 25°C): monocrystalline panel loses 45 × 0.40% = 18% output. A nominally 40W panel produces only 32.8W at peak summer temperature. This is why panel oversizing (1.5–2× LED wattage) is essential - not optional.
Panel Certifications to Verify
IEC 61215: standard for crystalline silicon PV module design qualification and type approval. Every solar panel used in Indian government tenders must be IEC 61215 certified. IEC 61730: safety qualification testing for PV modules. ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers): for projects funded by MNRE or central government schemes, the solar panel must be on the MNRE Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). Check at mnre.gov.in/solar-energy/. Non-ALMM panels are not eligible for government subsidy. BIS IS 14286: Indian standard for crystalline silicon panels - increasingly required in state tenders.
Panel Quality - What to Check Physically
Glass: tempered safety glass (not acrylic or polycarbonate) - check by tapping (clear ring) and weight. Backsheet: white or black polymer - should be uniform with no bubbles or delamination. Frame: anodised aluminium - check for anodising quality (uniform silver finish, no bare aluminium patches). Junction box: IP65 rated, with MC4 connectors - the J-box is the most weather-vulnerable component. Bypass diodes inside the J-box: verify 3 bypass diodes for a 72-cell (24V) panel or 2 for a 36-cell (12V) panel. Diodes prevent hot-spot failure when cells are partially shaded. Cell appearance: uniform blue/black colour - visible cracks, chips, or bright spots indicate damaged cells.
