What Makes Billboard Lighting Different
Unlike road lighting (which illuminates a horizontal surface) or area lighting (which covers a wide ground area), billboard lighting must: direct all light onto a vertical surface (the advertisement face) with minimal spill onto surroundings. Achieve high uniformity across the board face - bright centre and dark corners makes the advertisement look unprofessional. Use cool white (5700–6500K) and high CRI (80+) to render advertisement colours accurately - a red logo that looks orange under poor-CRI lighting undermines brand identity. Meet local authority requirements for light pollution control - many cities now restrict hoarding lighting brightness after midnight.
Wattage and Placement for Common Billboard Sizes
Standard 10×20 feet (3m × 6m) billboard: use 2–3 × 100W LED flood lights mounted at the bottom of the board, tilted upward at 45–60°. For uniformity, use a wider beam (90°) light if the mounting distance from the board is short, or narrower beam (60°) if the lights are further away. Large format 12×24 feet (3.6m × 7.3m) hoarding: 3–4 × 150W LED flood lights. Unipole billboard (large, freestanding): 4–6 × 200W on two mounting arms - two at bottom front, two at top rear, aimed forward-downward. LED backlit billboard (flex or vinyl with internal illumination): uses LED strip or dedicated flat panels behind the face - not external flood lights.
Colour Temperature for Advertising
5000–5700K: standard for most outdoor advertising - good colour rendering, high impact. 6000–6500K: for bright white background advertisements and food advertising (white backgrounds look crisp). 4000K neutral white: for heritage or premium brand advertising requiring a warmer, more sophisticated look. Avoid 3000K (warm white) for billboards - red and orange colours bleed into each other, and text readability reduces. CRI ≥ 80: mandatory for any colour-critical advertising. For FMCG brands with specific Pantone-matched colours: specify CRI ≥ 90 to ensure brand colour accuracy.
Energy Savings and Compliance
Before LED: most outdoor advertisements used 400W–1000W metal halide flood lights running 10–12 hours/night. After LED upgrade: 100–200W LED achieves superior uniformity and colour. Energy saving: 60–75%. For a 10-billboard campaign in a city, running 12h/night: old MH: 10 × 400W × 12h × 365 = 17,520 kWh/year = ₹1.23 lakh/year.
