The Garrison Engineer (GE) Kamptee, under Military Engineering Services, has invited bids worth ₹1.34 crore for the provision of solar hybrid street lights at Kamptee Military Station near Nagpur.
What makes a street light 'hybrid'
A standard solar street light runs entirely off its own panel-charged battery, going dark if the battery is depleted after a long stretch of poor sunlight. A hybrid system adds a secondary power path — typically a grid connection or a larger backup battery bank — so the fixture switches over automatically rather than staying unlit, which matters more on a defence installation than on a typical village road.
Why a military station specifies hybrid
Perimeter and internal lighting at a defence establishment is treated as a security requirement, not just a convenience — an unlit stretch after several cloudy days is a genuine operational gap. Specifying hybrid systems here removes that failure mode while still capturing most of the running-cost savings a pure solar setup offers.
Scale of the contract
At ₹1.34 crore, this is a station-wide lighting upgrade rather than a localised fix, suggesting the contract covers a substantial share of Kamptee's internal roads, perimeter stretches, and common areas.
