How LEDs Work Electrically
An LED is not a resistor - it does not obey Ohm's Law. Its current increases exponentially with voltage. A tiny increase in voltage causes a large increase in current, which generates heat, which causes the forward voltage to drop, which causes even more current - a thermal runaway that destroys the chip in seconds. This is why LEDs must be driven by a constant current source - one that actively regulates the current to a precise value regardless of voltage variation. The voltage across the LED adjusts itself; the current is held constant by the driver circuit.
Constant Current Driver - The Correct Type for LEDs
A constant current LED driver outputs a fixed, regulated current (specified in milliamps - e.g., 700mA, 1050mA, 1400mA, 2100mA). The output voltage varies automatically to maintain this current as the LED warms up and its forward voltage changes. Key parameters: output current (mA) - must exactly match the LED module's rated current. Output voltage range (V) - must encompass the LED string's forward voltage at operating temperature. Common ratings: 700mA (for lower-power LED strings). 1400mA (for medium-power). 2100mA (for higher-power highway lights). All quality LED street lights, flood lights, and highbay lights use constant current drivers exclusively.
Constant Voltage Driver - When It Is Used
Constant voltage drivers output a fixed voltage (typically 12V or 24V DC) and allow the current to vary. They are used for: LED strip lights (where each section has its own current-limiting resistor). LED signage and decorative lighting with resistor-ballasted LED arrays. They should never be used for LED street light modules or power LED arrays without additional current-limiting circuitry. A constant voltage driver connected directly to a power LED module causes thermal runaway and immediate failure. If you see a product claiming to use a 12V power supply for a 30W street light: verify it has current regulation - a bare 12V adapter without current control will destroy the LED.
How to Verify Your Street Light Has Constant Current
Check the driver label: it should state output current in mA (e.g., 700mA CC). 'CC' designation means constant current. A driver labelled only in V (e.g., 12V DC, 3A) is constant voltage - check if there is additional current regulation downstream. Test with a clamp ammeter: measure the current to the LED module at startup and after 30 minutes of operation. A constant current driver maintains the same reading throughout. A constant voltage setup shows current increasing as the LED heats up (dangerous). Request the driver datasheet: the output specification section should clearly state 'constant current output' with the current value in mA and the compliance voltage range.
