Energy Efficiency
CFL efficacy: 50–70 lm/W. LED efficacy: 130–160 lm/W. A 40W LED produces the same road light as an 80–100W CFL. Switching a 100W CFL street light to a 45W LED saves 55W per light. At 10 hours/night, that is 200 kWh/year per light saved. At ₹7/unit, that is ₹1,400/year per light. For a colony with 50 CFL lights, the LED upgrade saves ₹70,000/year in electricity - paying for the upgrade in under 2 years.
Lifespan
CFL rated life: 8,000–15,000 hours. LED rated life: 50,000 hours. At 10 hours/night, a CFL needs replacement every 2–4 years. An LED lasts 13+ years without replacement. Beyond rated life, CFL output degrades rapidly and the colour shifts to pink - very noticeable on road. LED maintains 70%+ output at end of rated life. For a municipality maintaining 10,000 lights: CFL replacement cost every 3 years = 10,000 × ₹300 (lamp) + labour = ₹40–60 lakh every 3 years. LED: essentially zero replacement cost for 10+ years.
Mercury and Environmental Hazard
Each CFL contains 3–5mg of mercury - a hazardous heavy metal. Broken CFL bulbs on roads contaminate soil and groundwater. Disposal requires special handling per E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022 - but in practice, most Indian municipalities dispose of spent CFLs in general waste, creating environmental liability. LED lights contain zero mercury and zero hazardous substances. This is not just an environmental benefit - it is a compliance issue for municipalities and industrial facilities subject to environmental audits.
Light Quality
CFL colour temperature is typically 4000–6500K but with poor colour rendering (CRI 70–75) and inconsistent colour between units. CFL light output is omnidirectional - much of the light goes upward and sideways, wasted in the fixture. CFL also has a warm-up time of 30–60 seconds to full brightness - problematic for motion-sensor controlled systems. LED is instant-on, highly directional, CRI 70–80+, consistent between units, and available in any colour temperature. For road safety and CCTV performance, LED is categorically superior.
