FSSAI Lighting Requirements

FSSAI's Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration) Regulations 2011 and the Food Safety Management System guidelines specify: food handling and processing areas: minimum 540 lux at working surface level (50 foot-candles). Inspection and quality control: minimum 1,080 lux (100 foot-candles). Storage areas: minimum 215 lux. All luminaires in food contact zones must have: shatterproof or protected covers (cannot shatter into food product). Easy-to-clean smooth surface (no dust-collecting crevices). Positioned to prevent contamination if the cover breaks. During FSSAI audit: food safety officers specifically check that all lights in food processing areas are either recessed, shielded, or enclosed to prevent glass falling into food if a cover breaks.

Shatterproof Cover Requirements

Standard LED luminaires with glass covers are not acceptable in food processing areas - a broken glass cover can contaminate an entire production batch. Acceptable cover types: polycarbonate (PC) covers - virtually unbreakable, shatter-resistant. If they do break, the pieces are large and detectable, not fine shards. Coated glass - glass with a shatter-resistant plastic film that holds fragments together if broken. Recessed luminaires - embedded in the ceiling, exposed surface is flush with ceiling tiles - no glass directly above food. Wire guards over standard fixtures - acceptable for dry storage areas where shatter risk is low. All Xera Tech food industry LED panels use UV-stabilised polycarbonate covers as standard.

CRI for Food Colour Accuracy

Food processing requires accurate colour rendering for: quality inspection (detecting colour defects, mould, discolouration). Production process control (correct browning of baked goods, colour of sauces). Packaging area (colour matching of packaging artwork to brand standards). CRI requirement by area: meat and seafood processing: CRI ≥ 90 (red rendering critical for freshness assessment). Dairy and fresh produce: CRI ≥ 80. Baking and confectionery: CRI ≥ 80 for browning assessment. Spice and powder processing: CRI ≥ 70 (colour of powders less critical). Retail display case lighting in food retail: CRI ≥ 90 for optimal product appearance.

IP Rating for Food Plant Hygiene Zones

Food plants are cleaned frequently and aggressively: dry area (packaging, wrapping): IP65 minimum. Wet area (washing, brine tanks, produce wash): IP66 minimum. High-pressure cleaning zones (dairy plant, meat plant): IP67 - direct high-pressure hose cleaning simulated by IP6X testing. Steam zones (cooking, pasteurisation, retort areas): IP66 minimum + high-temperature rated (80°C+). CIP (Clean-in-Place) areas in dairy: IP67 - these areas are periodically flooded with hot caustic or acid wash solution. Stainless steel 316 hardware throughout food plants - zinc hardware corrodes rapidly in dairy and meat plant environments.
